Press Box Honors Sessions' Legacy
By Gordie Frierson
CIU Athletics gained a game-changing facility asset this summer with the addition of the Sessions Field Press Box.
"The press box is a much-needed addition to the soccer stadium and will enable us to provide a better experience for our athletes and fans," explained CIU Athletic Director
James Whitaker.
The 22-foot-tall structure will streamline sports information and game operation procedures during contests on the field. The press box features a climate-controlled space with high-speed internet, scoreboard control console, sound system and, most importantly, a sweeping view of Sessions Field.
Assistant Athletic Director of Operations
Scotty Grigsby spoke on the impact the building will have saying, "The press box will improve our game-day operations for men's and women's soccer. It gives us a more professional and stable base of operations for running games."
Funds for the press box were generously donated by the Sessions family in honor of the late Elizabeth Sessions whose contribution to the university made the construction of Sessions Field possible.
"I'd like to thank the Sessions family for being a great friend of CIU Athletics and helping us add the Press Box to Sessions Field. The Sessions Family understood the vision for CIU athletics from the beginning and has been a great supporter as we continue to grow the opportunities for athletic teams to use their sport to make an impact for Christ," commented Whitaker.
The sessions family released a statement on the press box saying "The family of Elizabeth Sessions is pleased to have completed the Press Box for the Men and Lady Ram's 2019-20 Soccer season. Mrs. Sessions was a graduate of CIU (CBC) and former member of the CIU Board of Trustees. Because of her love for the Lord and CIU, her family members Don and Mary Taylor have completed the Press Box in her memory and for God's glory."
A press box dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, August 30 at Sessions Field before the 7PM Men's soccer game versus Grace College (Ind.).
